Zia, distraught over breaking up with his girlfriend, decides to end it all. Unfortunately, he discovers there is no real ending, only a run-down afterlife that is strikingly similar to his old one, just a bit worse. Discovering that his ex-girlfriend has also "offed" herself, he sets out on a road trip, with his Russian rocker friend, to find her. Their journey takes them through an absurd purgatory where they discover that being dead doesn't mean you have to stop livin'.

It is a time of darkness in the land. Prophesy has foretold that a child born with a special mark and magical powers will one day depose the evil witch-queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh). To put a halt to the prophesy and ensure her evil reign, Queen Bavmorda sends out an edict to round up all pregnant mothers in the region to have their babies killed; the child with the mark will be shown a fate even worse than death.

Thus begins Willow, a sword-and-sorcerer fantasy written in part by George Lucas as an obvious homage to J.R.R. Tolkien. Consider, if you will, the major fact that the film involves a race of little people called "Elwyns," better known as "Hobbits," and a race of "big" people, or averaged sized humans known as "Daikini," otherwise hailed as "the race of Men" in a far superior literary marvel. Then there are a handful of fairies, trolls and brownies to make things interesting. Willow's Ewoks, if you will.

The title character, Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) is one such Elwyn, a "have-not" Elwyn as it were, in debt up to his petite eyeballs with the main local businessElwyn. His main ambition is to become an apprentice to the local magician, but luck rarely comes his way. When his children find the Daikini baby in a nearby river, luck finally changes for the best.

Or at least, only to a certain extent, that is - the only Daikini/human/Man he can find that is capable of taking care of the baby is none other than Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) - the semi-stoned protege of Inigo Montoya (You killed my father: prepare to die). Madmartigan is, of course, a bit of a rogue, thief, scoundrel, swordsman and womanizer (not necessarily in that order) locked in a cage hanging above the Daikini Crossroads.

The people of Whangara believe that their first ancester, Paikea, arrived on the back of a whale. In the centuries that followed, a line of first born boys have descended from him to become chiefs - until today. Today, the tradition would fall to a girl named Pai, but her grandfather chief refuses to acknowledge her claim. Although there are a number of fine performances, it is Castle-Hughes that stands out with her determined claim. This beautifully photographed modern tale, based upon Maori tradition, should be on everyones "must see" list. Highly Recommeded.

The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen) is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon (Academy Award nominee Armin Mueller-Stahl), whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold and brutal core, the family's fortunes are tested by Semyon's volatile son and enforcer, Kirill (Vincent Cassel), who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father. But Nikolai's carefully maintained existence is jarred once he crosses paths at Christmastime with Anna Khitrova (Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts), a midwife at a North London hospital. Anna is deeply affected by the desperate situation of a young teenager who dies while giving birth to a baby. Anna resolves to try to trace the baby's lineage and relatives. The girl's personal diary also survives her; it is written in Russian, and Anna seeks answers in it. Anna's mother Helen (SinÃ©ad Cusack) does not discourage her, but Anna's irascible Russian-born uncle Stepan (Jerzy Skolimowski) urges caution. He is right to do so; by delving into the diary, Anna has accidentally unleashed the full fury of the Vory. With Semyon and Kirill closing ranks and Anna pressing her inquiries, Nikolai unexpectedly finds his loyalties divided. The family tightens its grip on him; who can, or should, he trust? Several lives - including his own - hang in the balance as a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution reverberates through the darkest corners of both the family and London itself.
