DESCRIPTION
Virtual Mixing Console is an application that lets you turn a PC with an
audio card into an automatable digital mixing console with effects
processing and a host for running virtual instruments.
VMC relies on two standards developed by Steinberg Software und Hardware
Gmbh that bring professional audio standards into the world of native
processing: ASIO 2.0 and VST 2.0.
ASIO (Asynchronous I/O) is a multi-channel audio streaming protocol
implemented as a special driver provided by sound card manufacturer.
This protocol allows to stream multi-channel audio from/to sound card
inputs and outputs by small buffers with sample-accurate synchronization
in such a way that the audio data can be processed by CPU of the computer.
Today professional audio interfaces in combination with fast processors
provide processing and streaming with a total I/O latency as low as 2 ms
which matches hardware based solutions.
VST (Virtual Studio Technology) a standard that specifies a format for
processing audio in a computer as a plug-in module that can be used
inside a host application. There are two types of VST plug-ins: effect
plug-ins (or just VST plug-ins) and virtual instrument plug-ins (or VSTi
plug-ins). VST is primary designed to process audio using CPU, however
it’s not bounded to. There are VST plug-ins that uses special DSP chips
to process audio: TC PowerCore, Universal Audio UAD-1, EMU PowerFX and
Creamware Pulsar XTC.
VMC implements a host for running VST plug-ins, both effect plug-ins and
virtual instrument plug-ins.

console based around a PC. Any digital mixer consists of the following
components:
Input/Output System that includes AD/DA converters and/or digital I/Os
such as SPDIF, AES/EBU, ADAT, TDIF etc Multi-channel Router and Mixer
Effects Processing System that includes EQing, dynamics, reverbs etc
Control surface with faders, pan pots, buttons, etcThe main advantage
of VMC is that it is based on an open architecture concept. VMC
provides a Virtual Studio Framework for building your own custom mixer
using open standards (VST, ASIO and MIDI) for components
interconnection and standard PC as a processing core.
The digital mixing system based on VMC looks like this:
A desktop or notebook PC computer running Windows XP Audio I/O interface
for the PC with ASIO 2.0 compatible drivers VMC Software as a core
framework A MIDI Control Surface (optional)You are free to choose any
PC computer that is fast enough to run a number of plug-ins you need
for your tasks. You can use multi-processor and HyperThreading-enabled
systems as VMC is highly optimized for them. You are free to choose
audio interface with the number of analog and digital I/Os and the
required converters quality. You are free to choose VST plug-ins you
would like to run. And finally you are free to use an external MIDI
controlling surface. VMC will combine all the components into a single
powerful digital mixing console.
VMC is not limited to be a digital mixer only. VMC supports running VSTi
plug-ins – virtual instruments. You can load up to 16 instruments in a
virtual rack. Outputs of loaded instruments are accessible as inputs
in the mixer for further effects processing. Every instrument can be
assigned to a midi port for input and output. As VMC is optimized
toward low-latency processing down to 1.5 ms so you can play your VST
Instruments in real-time like any other hardware gear.
The heart of VMC is Mixer. It provides all the standard mixer facilities
found on any outboard mixer: channels, group, send and master buses,
parametric 4/10 band stereo on-channel EQs and FX inserts. The mixer
core is based on modern multi-threaded audio engine with dynamic thread
dispatching that is optimized toward multi-processor systems (up to 4
CPUs). All mixer parameters can be controlled through MIDI thus enabling
full external control.
